Legal Jobs in the South Coast

The South Coast is one of the strongest regional legal markets in England, and one of the least talked about. Southampton and Bournemouth between them host the regional offices of half a dozen national firms and a group of large, long-established local practices, and the corridor from Winchester through Salisbury to the Dorset coast carries a private client market built on retirement wealth, agricultural estates and the marine and defence industries.

We place from paralegal and newly qualified through to Partner and General Counsel across the region, and because our head office is in the South West we treat the South Coast as home territory rather than an outpost.

Southampton is the commercial centre. Blake Morgan, Paris Smith, Moore Barlow, Shoosmiths, Womble Bond Dickinson and Clarke Willmott all run substantial offices in the city, recruiting across corporate, commercial, real estate, employment, shipping and litigation, and Dutton Gregory and Warner Goodman anchor a strong second tier across Southampton, Winchester and Fareham. Portsmouth adds defence and public-sector work, and the in-house market — Carnival, Ordnance Survey, the insurers and the marine businesses along the Solent — is the deepest on the coast.

Bournemouth and Poole are the second hub. Lester Aldridge, Steele Raymond, Ellis Jones and Coles Miller are large Dorset-headquartered practices, and Trethowans runs offices across Bournemouth, Poole, Southampton and Salisbury. Private client is the standout practice area here — Dorset has one of the oldest populations in the country and a deep private client market — followed by residential and commercial property, family and personal injury.

Salisbury and south Wiltshire sit naturally with the coast: Wilsons and Batt Broadbent in Salisbury are notable for private client, agricultural and charity work, and Swindon's larger firms — Thrings, RWK Goodman — recruit steadily across commercial and property. Winchester has a concentration of private client and family work to match its postcode, and the Isle of Wight sustains a small but stable general practice market.
